For the generation of today, hearing “Fleetwood Mac” is akin to hearing stories about the Beatles or Elvis Presley. You know them but not quite. You get to hear what their music is about but you do not totally digest what they are all about. The one thing though that separates the Fleetwood Mac from other artists is that they are still around for the younger generation to enjoy.
Fleetwood Mac is a British-American rock band that became famous during the 70s. The group first got together in London in 1967. Having been around for a long time, it is quite expected that the band would have undergone a number changes in the line-up. To date, the only original member still with the band is Mick Fleetwood. Although many consider John McVie as also an original member (after all, Fleetwood Mac is a combination of Mick’s and John’s last names), he was actually not part of the band when the group came out with their first single. He is also notably absent during the band’s first concert as he still had to iron some things out with John Mayall. The band typically deals with songs belonging to such genres as rock, blues, pop rock, and soft rock. They have worked with a number of labels including Reprise and Warner Bros.
Fleetwood Mac was able to achieve commercial success between 1975 up to 1987. What started this was Bob Welch’s announcement and subsequent leaving of the band. With a hole that needs to be filled, Fleetwood scouted Van Nuys, CA for a replacement. This led him to Lindsey Buckingham who he convinced to join him in the band. However, Buckingham would only join if Fleetwood would also include his girlfriend then, Stephanie Nicks. Fleetwood decided to get both artists, a move that proved to be what the band needed. It was during this time that the band was able to release their most ambitious project, the album Tusk. The album was experimental in nature and featured quirky sounds from the renowned rock band. This is primarily due to the influence of the New Wave sound which was gaining ground at that time.
Come 2013, the band is set to hold a 34-city US tour which would start on April 4 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, OH. The said tour would be some sort of a celebration of the 35th year of their Rumours album which was released in 1977. The said album is considered to be one of the band’s most successful as they were able to sell 40 million copies. Aside from that, the album was also able to peak at the top spot, a position it held for more than 31 weeks. One of the most notable singles in the said album is, “Dreams” which happens to be the bands only US no. 1. As part of the tour, the band would be reissuing a deluxe version of Rumours containing previously unreleased studio and live tracks.
Currently, the band’s line-up include Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks. The last two joined the band in 1975.
