Ask any teenager from the 90s to define the music of that era and the term R&B is sure to come up. The 90s were all about R&B. The rhythm and blues movement really made its way into the mainstream back in the 90s and the evidence can be seen all over the charts. From TLC to Brian McKnight, the decade was legitimately packed with some of the biggest R&B artists of all-time. Of all those terrific musicians, none could boast the same type of hit making ability as the all-male group Boyz II Men.
If the 90s was the decade of R&B then Boyz II Men were the effective faces of that decade. Before the group came along, R&B was established but it was far from being the draw that it is today. What the group brought to the music scene was not entirely unique, but it was music done well and done right. The group that fans became familiar with featured Nathan and Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman and Michael McCary. The first real impact the group made on the music scene was with the song “End of the Road”. It proved to be the beginning of great things for the fledgling foursome. The single reached the top of the charts, gained massive airtime on radio stations and became one of the signature songs of that year. The group had a hit to call their own and now came the task of proving they were more than just a one-hit wonder.
In 1994, the group launched the album entitled “II”. In an aim to establish themselves as the preeminent R&B group, the album featured only the most soulful songs along with the most breathtaking male vocals. The efforts of the group were rewarded and it came in the form of even more number one hits. Both “On Bended Knee” and “I’ll Make Love to You” reached the top of the charts. The group earned the status of proven hit-maker and they ascended into the ranks of the most successful musicians of all-time. Their next studio album entitled Evolution did not reach the same level of success as its predecessors but it still contained a number one hit in the song “Four Seasons of Loneliness”. The group’s later album releases failed to match the same success of the older ones and in 2003, following the retirement of member Michael McCary, the group would also go on hiatus from the music industry.
Since that time the group has gotten active again within the music industry. They released cover albums and went on tour to promote their music and to no one’s surprise, the group still had a loyal following of fans that were following the music. Boyz II Men has also announced that they will go on tour in the summer of 2013 along with other notably boy groups such as New Kids on the Block and 98 Degrees. The group is going stronger than ever and that same sound that made people fall in love from the 90s is filling the air yet again.
