“Calm before the storm” is an idiomatic expression that described an unnatural state of peace that usually signals that something bad is about to happen. This idiomatic expression came about as a result of the fact that, when a storm is approaching, birds and other animals, tend to return to their nest and quiet down. It is the eerie silence, because of the absence of birds singing, that is considered as the calm before the storm. Simply put, a false sense of peace. And this might just be what’s waiting to happen with the LA Lakers.
With the current line up, especially now that they have acquired both Steve Nash and Dwight Howard, that the LA Lakers is featuring right now, there is very little doubt that LA Lakers would be able to lord it over in 2013. That is, if they would be playing based on pure talent alone.
Let’s face it, LA Lakers IS Kobe Bryant’s team. With Dwight Howard by his side, the team would be unbeatable. However, if Dwight Howard is not ready to share the spotlight with anyone, LA Lakers could be in trouble. We all know that Kobe Bryant tends to hog the ball too much. If Howard would take offense on this, there might be more one-upping during the game than really scoring baskets for the team.
Of course, you also have to consider the fact that most of the bankable players of LA Lakers are hitting their 30s. At this stage, most of them would have seen it all and would have already played for quite some time. The nature of wear and tear would dictate that there would come a point when their body would no longer be able to deal with the stress. Although there are a few “young ones” in the Lakers, not all of them can be considered at the same skill level as Bryant and Nash.
Also, let’s not forget the fact that Howard’s back injury might cause him to play at a level lower than before. You have to keep in mind that it was his back injury that has prevented him from a prior basketball camp commitment. He, himself, has hinted on the possibility that he might be unable to play during the first few games of the team. If he is unable to find a way to deal with his injury, the Lakers might find themselves one star player short.
On the upside, we can bank on the fact that, with Bryant being a firm believer of Mike Brown’s system, we might see him being a little more open to what the other team members have to offer. Besides, Gasol and Bryant are good friends. Aside from that World Peace, Nash and Howard all seem to get along pretty well.If they would just have some time off to bond with each other, then they would really have that team spirit and become the team to beat this 2013.
