Los Angeles Lakers Has Their Backs Against the Wall Anew

Would the Los Angeles Lakers suffer the same fate they had in last year’s Semifinals? It will be seen on 18^th and 19^thof May when the Lakers host the Oklahoma City Thunder for all important Game 3 and 4. Two wins in Staples Center would only mean that the series would be back in LA for Game 6. A single win would at least help avoid a sweep, which the Lakers suffered at the hands of eventual 2011 champions Dallas Mavericks. Just a few days ago, the Lakers showed how good they can be during the Game 7 win over the upstart Denver Nuggets in their First Round series. Everybody was involved and Kobe Bryant was there to put the game away for good. A couple of losses later and the Lakers are in the same situation like what they after failing to close out Denver in Game 5 and 6.

First was a 29-point loss in Game 1 of their Semifinal series with the Thunder. This game showed the fatigue of the Lakers after just playing a couple of days earlier and the Thunder’s fresh legs which swept Dallas in First Round. The blowout loss was followed by 2-point defeat, a game which they had until they let their guard down and allowed Oklahoma City to come back. The Lakers had a 7 point lead with less than 3 minutes to play before allowing a 9-0 run from the Thunder to eventually lose the game. Down by 1 with five seconds remaining, the Lakers drew up a play that would help them grab a lead but a missed three-pointer from Steve Blake deprived them from stealing home court advantage. Questions have definitely been raised for the Lakers all season long and these two losses further add to it.

After blowing a lead late in Game 2, there are two things that the Lakers can look at. First is that despite all the youth and athleticism that Oklahoma City has, the Lakers were able to hang in there with the Thunder. Second is that a 29-point drubbing really hurts but a blown lead and eventually losing the game is much stingier. Through these two things, do the Lakers believe themselves even more to win Game 3 and 4?

Kobe, which had his share of lapses late in Game 2, said that there were some things that can be taken positively after the loss especially on the defensive end. Bryant pointed out that the things they discovered defensively can be used by them to get back in the series. The 33-year-old future Hall of Famer chose to focus on the positive rather than the negative, on the game which he finished shooting 0 for 5 and committing two turnovers late.

The Lakers are in the same situation as it was entering Game 7 versus Denver and if guys like Blake, Metta World Peace, Pau Gasol, and Andrew Bynum played the same way, the Lakers has their chances.
