When the curtain finally closed on the 2011-2012 NBA Season, the Miami Heat was left as the only team standing and with it the right to become known as NBA Champion. It was a long time coming for many members of the Heat franchise and for LeBron James in particular, the victory finally cemented his claim to being the best basketball player alive today, a title he could not claim before because of his glaring lack of a title. For James, it was also the end of an arduous quest. After spending years chasing after that elusive championship, he was finally able to silence his critics with a career-defining performance over the length of the season. The man known as King James had finally claimed his throne and now came the more challenging task of actually defending it.
Flanked by multiple time all-stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh along with a whole host of very effective role players, the team knew it still had the requisite pieces to become a champion yet again. But they also knew that they could not stand idly by and just rest on their laurels. In response, they lured sharpshooting guard Ray Allen to the team to bolster a roster that was now gunning for its second consecutive title. The Miami Heat headed into the 2012-2013 season with a target on their back but with a simple goal also on their mind and that was to win their second straight NBA title.
Now that the season has gotten past its halfway point, it is safe to say that the Miami Heat is still the team to beat. LeBron James is hot on the trail of his fourth NBA MVP and he is yet again showing exactly why he is known as the best basketball player alive today. His all-around game is starting to become even more refined. After eschewing the mid-range and long-range shots for the duration of last season, LeBron has gone to the post at an even more pronounced rate this year. In addition to LeBron’s remarkably consistent performance, thee other Heat players have also fulfilled their roles admirably so far. Dwyane Wade may have lost a step or two when it comes to speed but he still remains an elite talent in the NBA. Chris Bosh has also continued to put up numbers at his position and along with the other role players on the team; the team is still looking as solid as ever.
The season so far has gone swimmingly for the Heat. The team is atop the eastern conference standings and the team also seems poised for a third straight Finals appearance. The true test of the team is yet to come however. When the monotony of the regular season gives way to the intensity of the postseason that is when the real games are going to begin for the Miami Heat. The road to repeating as champs is going to be even more difficult to tackle than the one that came before it and this is a reality that the team will get to know very well in the coming months.
