New York Knicks: Life After Linsanity

From Lin-sanity to insanity, that might be what most people are thinking about Knicks owner, James Dolan, made very little effort to keep Jeremy Link from flying to Houston Rockets. After all, with the buzz that Lin has generated last season, leading to the coining of the term “Lin-sanity”, it would seem impractical and very foolhardy for any team to just let him go. But let go New York Knicks did. To date, all the pressure rests mainly on the shoulders of Carmelo Anthony.

The New York Knickbockers, more commonly known as the New York Knicks, belongs to the Atlantic Division of the NBA Eastern Conference. Established in 1946, it is one of the two remaining original NBA teams that are still located in their original city, the other one being Boston Celtics. Ever since the Brooklyn Nets have moved to New York, many people see the recently transferred NBA team as “encroaching” on the Knicks territory especially with the upcoming NBA season.

Now, before you start cursing James Dolan, let’s take a look first at the different factors that had led to this decision of letting Lin go. For one, not many people may know it but the New York Knicks has to follow existing caps on salary. That being the case, the most that the team owners can offer the NBA star is a contract for four years that would bring him $24 million. This is aside from the fact that team owners also have to worry about the contract price that they have to put into their budget should their other bankable and seasoned players opt to stay. Of course, let’s not forget the luxury tax. Well, Dolan has been down this road before and I think, there is also some wisdom to his choices.

So how would Knicks survive now that the Linsanity might be fading away? What makes Knicks fans a bit worries is what the management has in mind when it comes to finding a replacement for the spot that Lin would be leaving. What the team currently has are Raymond Felton, Jason Kidd, and Pablo Prigioni. There are a number of better players than Felton, what with him showing a poor start last season. Kidd, on the other hand, is considered to be one of the lowest point guards during the last season. Prigioni can also be seen as well past his prime. Fans, however, need to remember that Jeremy Lin is not the only member of the New York Knicks. There is still Carmelo Anthony. The team would just have to figure out how to build a bond with each other. They would also have to clearly understand what the role of each one is. If you would look at it from a different angle, you would notice that the team currently lacks the needed cohesion in order to pull it off as well as the understanding of what the responsibility of each player is. All, except Anthony.
