In the state of Texas, life may not necessarily begin and end with football, but it’s pretty close, and the fans within the state certainly reinforce that idea. No team in the state has been on the receiving end of as much love and hate as the Cowboys from Dallas. This is the team with the bold blue star for a logo, the larger than life owner watching every game, and the extraordinarily large stadium it calls home. This is the one team that most truly embodies the largesse and brashness of American football that has made it so attractive and compelling. So many elements combine to make this team such a fascinating one to follow, and seeing how the upcoming season plays out for them alone is going to be worth the price of the season tickets.
No player on the Cowboys is as polarizing as the man under center, the one and only Tony Romo. Romo is regarded within football circles as one of the more talented players at his position, and yet, he has no real postseason success to show for it. So many from his same generation have already climbed to the top of the football world, and yet there remains Romo, ringless as ever, and slowly inching towards the point where his age may slowly cause his skills to erode. The physical tools are there with Romo, he has the cannon arm, the mobility, and even that difficult to define look that seems to be found only with the truly elite and yet, it’s been years now and still very little in the form of postseason success has come to the Cowboys. Despite the seemingly untapped potential, and the lack of postseason success, Romo was actually the recipient of a recent contract extension. It seems to indicate that the franchise does indeed see him as their quarterback of both the present and the future. It’s a gamble of sorts of course. In a sense, it’s a big money wager that a talented player is finally going to tap into his immense potential, or it could very well be money being flushed down the drain, as it’s spent on a player with limited abilities who is already on the downturn of his career.
The one who awarded Romo with his extension is none other than Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Jones has very much become the face of the franchise, engineering one of the most successful brands in American sports and serving as one of the driving forces behind one of the most spectacular structures in the history of architecture. The stadium the Cowboys call home is definitely going to be a part of Jerry’s ultimate legacy, but of course, the goal in the end is still to win a championship, and it’s a goal that has really been elusive for the franchise.
Romo remains the one man who has the most control over the Cowboys’ ultimate fate this season, and at the very least, it appears as though owner Jerry Jones is behind him all the way.
