Despite winning three straight to force a game 7 against Vancouver last season, the Chicago Blackhawks couldn’t repeat the success of the previous year’s Stanley Cup winning campaign. But with some off-season manuevering, including the acquisition of former Philadelphia Flyer rival Dan Carcillo, the Hawks are looking to make another run for the Cup. Founded in 1926, the Blackhawks were one of the Original Six teams in the National Hockey League. They won their first league championship in 1934, followed by another in 1938. Their next title, in 1961, would be their last until 2010 — the second longest Cup drought in NHL history. They broke that streak when – led by young captain Jonathan Toews and a squad that included Patrick Kane, Marian Hossa and Duncan Keith — the Hawks beat the Flyers off Kane’s overtime goal in game 6. The Hawks have retired the numbers of netminders Glenn Hall and Tony Esposito, defensemen Keith Magnuson and Pierre Pilote, and forwards Bobby Hull, Denis Savard and Stan Mikita. Other prominent players to wear the Blackhawk colors have included Chris Chelios, Tony Amonte, Eddie Belfour and Jeremy Roenick. The uniform itself is famous, going through few changes since the Roaring ’20s. GQ magazine declared it one of the 25 coolest in sports, and The Hockey News ranked it best in the NHL. For the 1995 season, the Blackhawks moved from Chicago Stadium to the United Center, which has been dubbed in recent years the “Madhouse on Madison.” As anyone who has been to a game knows, the nickname is well-deserved. After goals and wins, the pounding drumbeat of the team’s adopted fight song, The Fratellis’ raunchy rocker “Chelsea Dagger,” blasts in the stadium. In recent years, the song has been played a lot. The team has made the playoffs each of the last three years. When they take the ice this season, they’ll be gunning for their fourth.
