Ever since they were crowned Stanley Cup champions in 2008, the Red Wings failed to win it again. They had the chance to win it again the following season after their championship year but lost in Game 7 of the Finals against the Pittsburgh Penguins. After losing their crown to the Penguins in 2009, Detroit failed for consecutive seasons to advance from the conference semifinals. Both of those seasons, they were defeated by the San Jose Sharks. With the attention not on them anymore, the Red Wings players are looking to surprise everyone the world in the playoffs. With a chip on their shoulders, Detroit wants to prove that they are not yet done.

Detroitcurrently tops the league rankings with 67 points and a 33(W)-16(L)-1(OTL) record. They are the only team with at least 33 wins so far and only one overtime loss. The Red Wings have been very good playing in Joe Louis Arena but it is a different story on the road. Their home record is at scintillating 20-2-1 record which tops the league. Owners of Detroit Red Wings tickets are definitely having a good time watching their team win those home games. Going on the road is a different story. They have so-so record with 13 wins and 14 losses. This record on the road is one thing that has kept them from dominating the league. With 14 more road games in the schedule, Detroit looks to win majority of those game to further hold on to the top spot.

During the recently concluded NHL All-star draft, veteran Detroit center Pavel Datsyuk was selected first overall by fellow NFL all star Zdeno Chara. With his selection to the annual midseason classic, Datsyuk becomes one of three forwards in the 2012 All Star Game to have not scored a goal in more than one All Star Game. The other players are Corey Perry (Anaheim Ducks) and Henrik Sedin (Vancouver Canucks) with two all star games played. Datsyuk played in 2004 and 2008 all star games.

So far this season, Detroit is really good statistically. The team is 5th overall in goals per game with 3.1 and 6th overall in goals against. Their power play percentage of 18.5 is 12th in the entire NFL. Datsyuk is leading the team in total points with 53 which place him 4th in the league. Ian White and Johan Frazen made it to the top of the plus or minus rankings. White got plus 26 (4th) while Frazen got plus 25 (5th). Defense specialist Jimmy Howard is 5th in goals against average with 2.03.
