About the Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings are old. Founded in the ‘20s as one of the Original Six, the team also has a penchant for developing experienced rosters. And it’s working. With 11 to date, the Wings have won more Stanley Cup championships than any other team. They’ve also shown remarkable consistency, having made the playoffs every year for the past 20. Formed originally as the Cougars, the team won their first championship in 1936…and their second the following year. Then, they made the finals each year between 1941 and 1943. By the late ‘40s, hockey legend Gordie Howe was one of the team leaders. Following a brief stint where they’d be dubbed the Dead Wings, the team drafted center Steve Yzerman and built a team around him. Marksman Brendan Shanahan and speedster Sergei Fedordov were added. That led to a four game sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1997 to win their first Stanley Cup since 1955, marking the end of one of the longest Cup draughts in hockey. They’d also win in 1998. The Wings most recent championship was in the 2007-08 campaign. They’ve lost in the conference semifinals to the San Jose Sharks each of the last two years. The Wings, indeed, are a paramount of consistency. Dubbed Hockeytown, Detroit has embraced the team, making the Wings one of the most popular franchises in the sport. Since the ‘50s, fans have taken part in the unusual tradition of chucking octopuses onto the ice for good luck. No judgment here: if it works, it works.
