Disney on Ice: A Christmas Tradition

With the holidays, specifically Christmas, just a few days away, most people indulge in a yearly tradition with their family – that of watching Disney on Ice. For years now, Disney has always been associated with childhood and innocence. That being the case, it is not surprising that most of the people who go and see Disney on Ice or parents with their kids.

Although Disney on Ice might seem like a recent production, the first actual show was held way back in 1981. Back then, the production was known as Walt Disney’s World on Ice and was  produced by Feld Entertainment in partnership with The Walt Disney Company. It was in 1998 that the production’s name was changed to “Disney on Ice“. Regardless of the change in name, the production has generally remained the same. Mascots of Disney characters skate around based on a specific routine. Together with them are dancers and skaters who have, so far, remained anonymous. To date, the show has been performed in more than a hundred of cities including those in the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Europe. In most cases, new productions do two tour legs first in North America before heading to Japan for its third year, and then Australia.

Each of the production typically follows a certain theme. For example, for 2012, the production is entitled, “Rockin’ Ever After,” and features such stories and characters as those from Brave, Beauty and the Beast, Tangled, and The Little Mermaid. On the other hand, the 2011 production was entitled, “Treasure Trove”, and featured characters and stories from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, and the Lion King among others. The 2011 production was formerly named “Disney on Ice Presents: Disneyland Adventure”. In the same year, the production entitled “Dare to Dream” also took the stage. The said production featured stories such as The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, and Cinderella.

The Disney on Ice may not be the perfect Christmas tradition for adults; but for children who are aspiring to become “princesses” someday, this would definitely make their day.

The Disney on Ice, for this year, has already featured the Rockin’ Ever After production at the PNC Arena as well as at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville. The said production featured a talent show that Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and other classic Disney characters as the judges, with shows starting as early as first week of September. On the other hand, the Treasure Trove production has just recently started at the Covelli Center. The latter production featured such characters as The Incredibles, Mickey and Minnie, and Alice in Wonderland.

Some of the most memorable productions of Disney on Ice include Worlds of Fantasy which was held in 2008, the Princess Wishes: Princesses and Heroes which was held in 2006, and 100 Years of Magic which took the stage on 1999.
