One of the talked-about extravagant musical plays is “Wicked”, which is completely entitled as “Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz”. It is in fact, the eleventh longest-running Broadway show in the history with a total of more than 4,155 performances all over the world. It celebrated its tenth anniversary last October 30, 2013 on Broadway and until now, this musical play remains among the most exciting Broadway shows for fans of different ages.
The plot of this musical play is basically patterned to Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West”, which tells the story of two rival witches with opposing viewpoints and personalities. They are Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and they happen to be rivals over the same love-interest as well. Similar to the 1939 “The Wizard of Oz” film and the 1900 “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” novel, “Wicked” also tackles the reactions to the corrupt government of the Wizard. However, the story in this musical play is told from the witches’ point of view.
The “Wicked” show is produced by Universal Pictures, choreographed by Wayne Cliento and directed by Wayne Cilento. It premiered at the Gershwin Theatre in October 2003, featuring stars Joel Grey (as Wizard), Kristin Chenoweth (as Glinda), and Idina Menzel (as Elphaba). Because of its spectacular production, it won 6 Drama Desk Awards and 3 Tony Awards. The original cast album won a Grammy Award as well. Other than that, “Wicked” has become a tremendous success after breaking box office records in different parts of the world. Since then, this 2 and a half hour musical play has become a big hit in each of its live performances.
