Wicked – Tigers, Lions, and Bears Oh My!

The ever-magical musical Wicked is based on the story Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. The musical tells the story of what happened to Glinda the Good Witch of the North and Elphaba, future Wicked Witch of the West prior to Dorothy coming into their lives. The two witches have difficulty with one another due to their extremely different personalities, viewpoints, and even combating love for the same man and ultimately the shunning of Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West. The music and sets throughout the musical are nothing short of enchanting. The songs truly tell a wonderful story and really gave viewers an idea of what may have happened to the beloved characters of Oz before Dorothy drops in with her ruby-red slippers.

The musical first appeared on Broadway in October of 2003. It continues it’s run today. In fact, according to Broadwayworld.com, Wicked Celebrated its 5 millionth audience September 29, 2010. The musical began its first North American tour in 2005 and that also continues today. Wicked has played in St. Louis, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Toronto. A second North American tour began in 2009, while Wicked made its international debut in London in 2006.

Wicked is also a Tony Award winning musical. In fact, it was nominated for 10 Tony Awards in 2004. Such nominations included: Best Musical, Best Book, Best Orchestration, and two Best Leading Actress nominations. The incredibly talented Idina Menzel won Best Leading Actress in a musical for her portrayal of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West.

Wicked has also been successful in other ways as well. For example, the music is so beautiful and relatable that it has been used in other media outlets as well. For example, “Defying Gravity” was covered on Glee with Lea Michele and Chris Colfer singing it together. Also, Kristin Chenoweth (who played Glinda) performed the song “For Good” from the musical Wicked as a tribute to Oprah on one of her final shows.

Wicked is truly a musical to see! The songs are fantastic, the costumes are beautiful, and most importantly the story has a wonderful message about inner beauty and good vs. evil. Wicked absolutely “defies gravity!”
